DoT to meet operators early next week to address call drops issue

September 18, 2015

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will hold a meeting with all telecom operators early next week to assess the call drops situation. The DoT will review whether operators have improved their network coverage to fill gaps over the past two months, especially in congested zones in dense urban areas during peak hours and will also share the results of internal network audits. It is expected to provide detailed operator-wise feedback on the actual progress levels in key cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow and Gwalior.

Meanwhile, operators will highlight that the Ministry of Urban Development has not given approvals for setting up of towers on the government buildings despite assurances from the telecom department. They will also ask DoT and the Ministry of Communications and IT to ask the Ministry of Defence to allow installation of mobile towers on land owned by armed forces.

Sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai) recommendations are due by mid-October.
